What Al-Baqi teaches us about community care
Every year, when we commemorate the destruction of Jannat al-Al-Baqi, we mourn the loss of sacred graves.
But if we pause and reflect deeply, we discover something more profound.
Al-Baqi is not only about destruction. It is about responsibility.
The resting place of members of the Ahlulbayt (as) was levelled, but their message of compassion, justice, and unity remains alive. Their lives were defined by service to the community.
So the question for us in the United Kingdom is simple: Are we caring for our communities the way they taught us?
Allah (swt) reminds us in the Qur’an:
“The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers…”
Surah Al-Hujurat, Ayah 10
Community care is not optional in Islam. It is foundational.
When we reflect on Al-Baqi, we are reminded that heritage can be erased physically – but community bonds cannot be erased if we protect them. True remembrance is not limited to tears; it is expressed through action.
This is where The Zahra Trust plays a vital role. By caring for those most vulnerable and in need, The Zahra Trust strengthens the very heart of community life.
In Britain, we are blessed with strong community ties and support. Yet many communities worldwide are suffereing from injustice and conflict. Community care means extending our concern beyond our own postcode.
British Muslim youth, known for their awareness and activism, can lead this effort. Whether through fundraising, volunteering, or raising awareness during Ramadan, young people can transform remembrance into renewal.
What Al-Baqi teaches us about community care is this: when one community suffers, other communities must rise to support.
Care is continuity.
Care is protection.
Care is building for the future.
