Who is Fatima?

Fatima al Zahra (SA), a 7th century revolutionary, serves as a role model for hundreds of millions of people around the globe today. As a pioneer in human rights, social justice advocacy and more, Fatima (SA) inspires millions to stand for the oppressed and serve those in need.

In Islam, Fatima (SA) is revered for her role as the beloved daughter of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and her designation as the greatest woman of this world and the hereafter.

The Prophet (SAW) said, ‘My daughter Fatima is the chief [Lady] of all the women of the worlds.’

Fatima al Zahra (SA) is also the wife of Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS), the first Imam of the school of the Ahlulbayt (AS) and the mother of the eleven infallible Imams. Without Fatima’s role as a mother, there is no connection between Prophethood and Imammah.

How does she inspire us?

Fatima (SA) was an exemplary role model in serving those in need and caring for others.

This verse in the Holy Qur’an was revealed in honour of Fatima (SA) and her family:

“And despite their love for it, they give the food to the needy, the orphan and the captive, [saying] ‘We feed you only for the sake of Allah. We do not want any reward from you nor any thanks.’” [76:8-9]

This verse was revealed when Fatima al Zahra (SA) and Imam Ali (AS) (some narrations also include Imam Hassan (AS), Hussain (AS) and their maid Fidha (RA)) fasted for three days after Allah (SWT) had healed Imam Hassan (AS) and Hussain (AS) from an illness. On each night, someone in need would come to their door asking for food and each night they would give what they had leaving themselves hungry.

On another occasion, on the wedding day of Fatima (SA), she donated her wedding dress to a woman in need. It is said that she quoted this verse of the Qur’an when asked why: “You will never attain piety till you spend from that which you love.” [3:92]

These are only a few of the examples of Fatima (SA)’s sacrifice and dedication to helping those in need. Fatima al Zahra (SA) is the inspiration for our work at The Zahra Trust and her dedication to supporting the impoverished is what motivates us. We strive for a world where all those in need can be supported in her name.
