Welcoming the Month of Ramadan: Excerpts from the Prophet’s (saww) Sermon
As Ramadan draws near, this timeless sermon of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saww) invites us to reflect on the beauty, mercy and spiritual opportunity of this blessed month.
It serves as a heavenly reminder that Ramadan is far more than a ritual fast — it is a season of mercy, transformation and divine closeness.
“O people, indeed the month of Allah has approached you with blessings, mercy and forgiveness. In the eyes of Allah, it is the best of all months, its days are best of all days, its nights are best of all nights, and it hours are best of all hours.”

Ramadan: A Month of Honour and Blessing
The Prophet (saww) said that Allah (swt) has declared Ramadan the best of all months — its days, nights and hours are the most beloved to Allah (swt).
In this month, believers are honoured as the guests of Allah (swt), chosen for His mercy and generosity.
Every breath becomes tasbiḥ, every peaceful sleep turns into worship, and sincere prayers are answered. This is an invitation to live Ramadan with awareness and devotion.
“It is a month in which you have been invited to be guests of Allah, and you have been made in it the people who have honour of Allah.”
Spiritual Practices Highlighted by the Prophet
The sermon emphasises not just fasting, but fostering virtuous character:
- Let hunger and thirst remind you of the hunger of the Day of Judgement.
- Give charity to the poor and needy, and be generous even in small ways.
- Lower your gaze from what is prohibited and guard your ears from forbidden speech.
- Show compassion to orphans — your kindness will reflect in Allah’s (swt) mercy upon your own family.
- Lengthen your sajdahs (prostrations) to lighten the burden of sins.
These practices encourage not just formal worship, but inner refinement and deep empathy for others.
Multiplying Rewards & Divine Mercy
The Prophet (saww) taught that deeds in Ramadan carry immense reward:
- Reciting one verse of Qur’an equals the reward of completing it in other months.
- Fulfilling obligations earns seventy-fold reward.
- Giving iftar to a fasting believer equates to freeing a soul from Hell-Fire.
The doors of Heaven are open, the doors of Hell are closed, and Satan is in chains — a divine environment for sincere worship and transformation.
