Stories of Forgiveness: What We Can Learn From the Mercy of the Prophet (saww)

What can we learn from the mercy of Prophet Muhammad (saww) today?

The Qur’an reminds us:

“We have not sent you, (O Muḥammad), but as a mercy for the universe.” (21:107

In a world marked by impatience and division, the Prophet’s (saww) example shows that mercy is not a weakness — it is a powerful force that heals, unites, and uplifts.

A World in Need of Mercy

Modern society often values pride over patience, retaliation over forgiveness.

But the Prophet (saww) showed us another way

When insulted, he remained calm.

When harmed, he forgave.

When mocked, he responded with dignity.

He said:

“O people, verily I am a mercy gifted (to you).” (al-Tabaqat al-Kubra, v.1, p.192

If he forgave those who wronged him, how can we show mercy in our homes, communities, and relationships?

Mercy in Action

The Prophet (saww) faced hostility throughout his mission.

He said:

“No one has been hurt the way I have been hurt for the sake of Allah (swt).” (Kanz al-Ummal, n. 5818

Yet he forgave:

  • The people of Ta’if
  • Those who harmed him physically
  • Those who insulted him
  • Those who repented after wrongdoing

He showed tenderness to children, orphans, and the poor. His compassion shaped every aspect of his leadership.

By following his example, we can practice mercy each day — forgiving, helping, and speaking kindly.
