There is a global water crisis.

785 million people around the globe do not have access to a basic drinking water service and 2 billion people around the globe use drinking water that is contaminated with faeces.

1 in 9 people around the globe do not have access to safe and clean drinking water. The consequences of this are multiple and affect all spheres of life. (Reference)

At The Zahra Trust, we work hard to provide sustainable water solutions for communities in need. Our Water Appeal was created to help built these solutions around the world for those who lack access to water. This project provides different options for water solutions that vary based on region typography and resource availability.

Pakistan

Within Pakistan we aim to provide multiple different water solutions in order to serve as many regions as possible. Electric water wells work by pumping clean water using a bore water well and an electric motor at the cost of £1,500. While much more convenient for beneficiaries, unfortunately, these wells can only be installed in regions with access to electricity.

In regions without electricity access hand pumps are installed instead. These provide access to safe clean drinking water through a manual pump in regions where there is no water or electricity. With these facilities come sanitation facilities to promote safe water hygiene. The total cost for these plants is £500.

In desert regions, solar water plants are required to provide safe drinking water. These plants consist of a bore well and solar panels which allow solar energy to power the motor and pumping of water. In these regions the water is very deep in the soil and therefore hand pumps are not an option.

Yemen

In a country where 18 million people are in urgent need of water, sanitation and hygiene assistance, access to clean and safe water remains crucial for basic human survival. In response to this crisis, water ultra-filtration plants have been built to purify existing but contaminated water sources. Each plant has the potential to provide up to 60,000 litres of clean water per day to local communities in Yemen, possibly serving up to 50,000 people. The completion cost for these plants is roughly £50,000. To date, four water plants have been completed and are servicing thousands in need.

Our response to the on-going global water crisis is only possible with your support.

Frequently Asked Questions about Water AID

Where are your water wells or water solutions built?

Currently, our various water aid projects are primarily taking place in Pakistan and Yemen. The exact location of the well depends based on what are the needs of the region considering factors such as electricity availability, drilling depth required to access water and other factors.

Can I build a water well in a specific location of my choice?

In order to uphold the best interest of our beneficiaries, we, unfortunately, cannot accommodate requests for water wells to be built in specific locations. This is done in order to ensure those who need access to safe water are able to get it at the best and most efficient rate possible.

How long do these solutions take to build?

Timeline for water solutions also depends on which type and region it is. Hand Pumps and Toilet Facilities: Typically, up to nine months for completion. Electric Water Wells: Typically, up to nine months for completion.

How many people to these solutions benefit?

The number of people who benefit from a solution depends on various factors such as the location of installation and capacity. The range could be anywhere from up to 100 individuals to thousands. In some communities, these water solutions are the only source of sustainable safe water for the entire village.

Can I include a message on the water well in memory of a loved one?

Yes, you certainly can! A message to indicate the well was been donated in memory of a loved one or to indicate that it has been completed on behalf of an individual or organization can be included in all of these sustainable water solutions.
