What Do We Learn from the Loyalty and Sacrifice of Ummul Baneen (sa)? 

Throughout history, Allah (swt) has provided the Ummah with examples of steadfast faith. 

Among them stands Ummul Baneen (sa), wife of Imam Ali (as) and mother of four noble sons. Her loyalty and sacrifice have inspired believers for generations. 

Her devotion reflects the Qur’anic teaching: 

“We have indeed honoured the children of Adam…” (17:70)

Who Was Ummul Baneen? 

Ummul Baneen (sa), born Fatima bint Hizam, belonged to the respected Banu Kilab tribe. (WikiShia) 

After the passing of Lady Fatima Al-Zahra (sa), she became the wife of Imam Ali (as). Their four sons — Abbas, Abd Allah, Ja’far, and Uthman — were all martyred in Karbala.

Loyalty Rooted in Faith 

Ummul Baneen (sa) demonstrated a loyalty founded on faith and love for the Prophet’s family. 

Upon entering the home of Imam Ali (as), she requested not to be called by her own name, Fatima, so as not to remind the children of Lady Fatima (sa) and reopen their grief. 

Her heart was dedicated entirely to the Ahlulbayt (as). 

She raised her sons to stand with Imam Hussain (as) and serve the truth with courage, no matter the sacrifice. 

Her Sacrifice: Strength in Sorrow 

The heart of Ummul Baneen (sa) held remarkable strength. 

Her sacrifice extended beyond losing her sons — it was in offering them willingly for the cause of righteousness. 

Every son she raised was prepared to defend Imam Hussain (as) with complete devotion. 

Imam Ali (as) said: 

“Surely, Allah (swt) has chosen for us followers (Shias), who assist us and are happy at our happiness and are sad in our sadness.” (Ghurar al-Hikam, v.1 p.135) 

She embodied this saying. Her sorrow was not for herself but for the Ahlulbayt (as), whose pain she deeply shared.
