What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is a month of the Islamic calendar where Muslims fast from dawn until dusk. Fasting requires abstaining from food, water and other prohibited acts. Ramadan is seen as the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, and it is a time when Muslims are encouraged to engage in increased acts of worship to reach closeness to Allah (SWT). These may include reading the Holy Qur’an, completing extra prayers and giving charity.

What do you do if you’ve missed a fast in Ramadan?  

Fasts that have been missed in Ramadan due to an exemption such as pregnancy/breast feeding, medical illness, menstruation or other causes can be made up outside of Ramadan. If these are not completed before the start of the next holy month, Fidyah should be paid for these days. If a fast has been missed without an exemption, Kaffarah should be paid. Why is it emphasised to give charity in the month of Ramadan? 

The holy month of Ramadan is a time to reap rewards, reflect on the principles of the Holy Qur’an and work toward implementing these principles.

Amongst the principles of the Holy Qur’an which is highly emphasised in the month of Ramadan is charity. 

Regarding charity, the Qur’an states: “Those who spend their wealth by night and by day, secretly and openly, shall have their reward with their Lord. No fear shall come upon them, nor shall they grieve” (Qur’an 2:274). In reference to the holy month of Ramadan, the Holy Prophet (SAW) said: ‘‘The greatest act of charity is carried out in the month of Ramadan.”   

Multiple narrations from the Holy Prophet (SAW) continue to emphasise the blessings and rewards earned for giving charity in the month of Ramadan.
